私がイギリスに行って、初めて出くわした表現は、‘Many Happy Returns of the Day!’ Happy Birthday To You!’

There are different ways of saying ‘Happy Birthday’ in English when you want to celebrate somebody’s birthday in word. I have never heard of the expression ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day!’ until I went to the UK. When lieterally translated into Japanese, the expression does not exactly mean ‘Happy Birthday’ as such. However, in the English-speaking countries or regions, the expression seems to be used as frequently as ‘Happy Brithday’! Sometimes, the shortened version of ‘Many Happy Returns!’ is used, for example, when you are handing a birthday present to the person in front of you. If in advance you get yourself familialise with the expression, then you will be fully ready for the phrase, and hence no time wasted for searching for the meaning of ‘Many Happy Returns of the Day!’

Finally, it so happens that today is my birthday!
