[English Version]

For a learner of English, to what extent he or she would like to improve English pronunciation probably differns from one person to another. Personally, I feel good pronunciation is always better. As long as you are not unrealistically obsessed with speaking Egnlish in ‘perfect’ pronunciation, I suppose it is all right for a given EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learner to try to master English pronunciation to an impeccablly perfect level. If you are learning English as a foreign language, it is very unlikely that you notice your English pronunciation improve overnight. My advice on this matter is as follows: be it a sound of consonants or vowels, try to improve the quality of your pronunciation over long period of time in a slow and steady manner.

Today, I would like to introduce the readers of this blog Mr Adrian Underhill who is one of the authorities in the field of English phonology. What follows is a video clip on YouTube about ‘pronunciation workshop’ conducted by Mr Underhill. The lecture is rahter long and has been divided into four parts on YouTube. The clips have been uploaded by MacMillan ELT and are available to the general public.

While you are viewing the afore-mentioned video clip, you will see the html address for ‘English phoneme chart’. Please visit the following site for an interative pronunciation practice. Just click the symbols you would like to hear the sound of on the chart. Upon clicking, you will hear the sound of a given symbol. Click here!

Yesterday I received two books from the UK Amazon.com, and one of them is by Mr Underhill. Although this book is written for mainly English teachers in mind, any student who is intereted in English phonology should get hold of a copy. What is nice about this book is that it comes with a CD. What follows is the detail of the book. If you are interested in improving your English pronunciation, I recommend you to obtain the copy by yourself.
