New image for the header!

As of today, the iamge used for the header of my blog has been updated into more of an autumnal theme. The original design is from a CD bundled with a book called ‘Japanese Traditional Pattern Collection 300’ or ‘Nihon no Dentoo-MoNyoo 300’ from the publisher ‘X-media’. The price of the book is 2,400 yen plus VAT. In the book, each image is annotated in both Japanese and English, which I think is a selleing point because the copy appeals to the visitors from overseas who may not understand Japanese but English. I really recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in Japanese traditional patterns. Just looking at each image during my coffee break can be so relaxing and soothing.

過眠症（ナルコレプシー）に関連した遺伝子を発見！

2008年9月29日付けのYOL（Yomiuri On Line）によると、東京大の徳永勝士教授（人類遺伝学）らのグループが、「過眠症（ナルコレプシー）」に関連した新たな遺伝子を発見したそうです。過眠症とは、「昼間なのに突然激しい眠気を感じて眠ったり、突然全身が脱力したりする病気」なのですが、この発見によって、近い将来、過眠症の原因が明らかになって、治療法が開発されると良いですね。同グループの論文は、２９日に「科学誌ネイチャー・ジェネティクス（電子版）」に掲載されます。

According to today’s YOL（Yomiuri On Line）, a research group led by Professor TOKUNAGA, Katsushi at the Univeristy of Tokyo has discovered a new gene linked to the onset of narcolepsy. Typcial syndrome of narcolepsy includes ‘suddenly feeling excessive sleepiness during the day time and fall asleep immediately’ or ‘a sudden loss of muscle tone (known as ‘cataplexy’). Through this discovery, it is hoped that the cause of narcolepsy becomes clear and a new treatment of the disease will be developled in the near future. The article is going to be published on the electronic version of  a US Science journal of ‘Nature Genetics’ on 29 September.

チケット売り場で「OAP」と書いてあったら？

イギリスに行く機会があると、電車の切符や有料のテーマパークや美術館、動物園などの入場券を購入する際に、OAP 料金という表示があるのに気付くかもしれません。これは、’Old－Age Pensioner’ 「年金受給者」の略で、一般料金よりも安くいろいろなチケットや入場券が買えるシステムになっています。日本で年金を既に受給されている方、入場券を購入する際に、「日本では年金受給者です！」と英語で一言言ってみる価値はあると思いますよ。遠回しに確認したいときには、少し英文は長くなりますが、以下のように問い合わせると良いでしょうね。

‘Good morning, I just wondered whether I would qualify as an OAP here as I am already a pensioner in Japan. Do I get a discount for the entrance fee?’

この表現が長すぎると思われた方は、もう少しダイレクトに ‘Hello, Do I qualify as OAP here?’ と端的に質問して、後はカウンターの人の対応に任せるという手もあります。

英語の表現（７）「うっかり失言すること」＝’a slip of the tongue’

私も経験ありますが、皆さんの中にも、不用意にうっかり言うべきでないことを言ってしまった経験がありませんか。いわゆる、「失言」と称されるものが、これに相当しますよね。そういうときには、英語で ‘a slip of the tongue’ を使うと良いでしょう。例文として、私の所持しているコーパスBNC (British National Corpus) には、以下のような一文がありました。参考にしてください。

‘If you are going away, tell only those who need to know — a slip of the tongue in the street, pub or corner shop could be overheard by the wrong sort.’

注－*the wrong sort=the wrong kind of people という意味です。

上で引用した英文の内容から判断すると、「（休暇か何かで）家をある一定期間の間留守にすることを公の場で軽々しく口にすると、それをそばで聴いていた人が、あなたの留守中に泥棒に入る恐れがありますよ」ということを注意しているものだと思われます。

この英語表現、直訳すると「舌が滑る」という意味になります。英語の発想でしょうが、日本語の発想が優勢な日本語話者から見ても、ニュアンスは理解できると思います。何か言うべきでないことを言った後に、相手に対して言い訳がましく、’Oh, that was just a slip of the tongue, and I did not actually mean it.’ とか言うこともありますけど、苦しい言い訳に聴こえますよね。

便利な英語表現－’the look of it’ 「ぱっと見た印象」

大部分の人は、ある対象物（食べ物、飲み物、人、品物、車、服、靴など）をぱっとみた瞬間に、何となく気に入る、または気に入らないと感じた経験があると思います。そう言うときに、相手から「これどう思う？」と聞かれたときに、’Oh, I don’t like it.’ 以外の表現を使ってみたくなりませんか。この状況で、’Well, somehow I don’t like the look of it.’ とかを代わりに使うことができます。「何となく第1印象が良くない」という心情を相手に伝えることができます。見た目は何の変哲もない、簡単な英語表現なのですが、実際の会話で使おうと思うと、なかなか出てきません。この表現構造は、名詞部分を別の名詞と入れ替えるだけで、以下に示したように、いろいろな状況で応用して使うことができます。

（１）何かの料理の臭いがしてきたときには、’I don’t know what it is, but I certainly like the smell of this dish!’

（２）新車のデザインを見たときには、’Oh, I quite like the design of this new model.’

（３）新しい服の生地を触りながら、’The new fabric feels so smooth on the touch, and I really like the texture of it!’

（４）彫刻などのフォルムを見ながら、’I somehow do not like the shape of this sculpture.’

（５）先日見た靴の色を思い出して、’Yes, we quite liked the colour of the pair the shop assistant showed us the other day.’

英語の表現（6）’That’s rich coming from you!’

この表現はイギリスでテレビを見ているときに聴いたものですが、会話をしている二人が言い争っているシーンで聞いた記憶があります。あまり、良い意味でなかったような気がしますので、感情的になったときに使う表現だと思います。記憶を元にインターネットで検索をしてみると、いくつかのリンクに英語で説明がありました。

文脈によって、いくつかの訳し分けが可能ですが、「あなたにそんなこと言われたくないよ」、「自分のことは棚に挙げて、良く言うよ」、「人のことを言えた義理じゃないでしょう」みたいな訳になるでしょうか。以下の会話で、使い方の例を挙げておきます。以下、兄弟で一緒に生活をしている、拓也（たくや）と薫（かおる）の会話という設定で読み進んでください。

Takuya: ‘Really、kaoru! How many times do I have to tell you to turn the light off when you finish using the dining room!’

Kaoru: ‘Oh, that’s rich coming from you. You often forget to turn the light off after using the toilet! You are as bad as me!’
