How was the activity we have tried for the first time today? Here are some tips or strategies you should bear in mind.
For the Japanese learners of English, the amount of chunks or a number of meaningful unit of words you can retain temporarily in the brain can be very limited because it is NOT your native language. The ability to retain certain amount of chunks temporarily in any language is related to how large or small your ‘memorizing capacity’ is in the brain. This capacity is often called ‘Working Memory’ in the study of language. If you are a native speaker of Japanese, you probably would not find it difficult to listen to one or two sentences and keep them temporarily in the brain, and when asked to repeat the entire sentences after five seconds, you can still recall everything more or less perfectly. However, when you try the same in English, you can only cope with a few English words at a time to recall. If you have not been trained to retain English chunks before, the result would be that you will forget almost everything soon after you hear the chunks. Do not worry because this is common when you are dealing with a foregin language.
So my tip for today’s ‘messaging game’ would be this: Don’t be greedy! As I have explained, it is a good idea to pick up a chunk of two or three words each time when relaying ‘a message’ to the person stadning next to you! If you were to try to relay the whole English sentence in one go, your friend would probably panic, and he or she would not be able to cope with the amount of information contained in the sentence. It is very likely that the whole sentence would be relayed in poor quality in the end.
So it is desireable to enhance the capacity of your ‘Working Memory’ if you would like to improve your skills in any foreign language including English. For that purpose, I truly recommend you to try ‘shadowing’ practice in English.
